Each year the Courier Mail titles 50 of Queensland’s best and brightest individuals, working on the cutting edge of their respective fields. This year SGAR artist Simone Eisler was dubbed the artist amongst this elite crew of innovative intellectuals. Eisler’s name was printed alongside the likes of a leading molecular geneticist, biomedical inventors, movie stars, an executive chef and many more.
SGAR would like to congratulate Nicola Moss for making the finalist list in the Gold Coast Art Prize. The prestigious Gold Coast Art Prize is now in its 45th year. The prize showcases excellent contemporary art practice from across Australia. This year there is a total of $30,000 for acquisitions. Moss’s finalist artwork came out of her 2012 residency at BigCi. This artwork looks at the paradox of sustainability. This year the current director of the Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art, Chris Saines will judge the prize.
Spiro Grace Art Rooms would like to extend our congratulations to Sophie Bottomley for taking out the ’15 Artists’ acquisitive prize put on by the Moreton Bay Regional City Council. Bottomley had a solo exhibition with SGAR in 2012. ‘15 Artists’ is an annual acquisitive award that plays a pivotal role in the ongoing growth of the Moreton Bay Regional Council Art Collection. Other SGAR artists involved were Simone Eisler and Tiffany Shafran. This year the director of QAGOMA Chris Saines judged the prize.
SGAR artist Archie Moore will create an entry for the 2013 University of Queensland National Artists' Self-Portrait Prize, remix. post. connect.. This year's prize explores the impulse to manipulate, present or exchange aspects of self, through artworks in a range of media. The exhibition acknowledges that identity is unstable, and that one’s sense of self is informed by multiple, often competing, influences, including heritage.
The past 6 months have seen SGAR artists Gerwyn Davies, Megan Cope and Archie Moore included in a number of significant commissions and exhibitions locally and internationally.
To mark the end of Daniel Templeman’s exhibition Four Rings, and to celebrate his contribution to the visual arts, SGAR is proud to host the launch of the publication: Daniel Templeman: Selected Works 2002–2013. Supported by Gadens Lawyers and Griffith University, the publication documents Templeman's career as one of Queensland's most prominent public artists whilst also documenting his extensive body of gallery works.

‘Mythopoetic: Women artists from Australia and India’ features the work of 15 female artists and surveys the way in which women are re-picturing, re-contextualising and re-imagining the feminine. The new mythology referred to is the collective embodiment of stories, histories and images that disrupt assumptions and visual representations of the physical body, identity, gendered roles, and sexuality. Megan Cope has been selected for Next Wave's emerging artists development program - Kickstart 2013. This program includes funding, professional and creative development, and networking opportunities for emerging artists from Across Australia. The 2013 Kickstart program will take place between February and September 2013, culminating in a work-in-progress showing of each project to an audience of peers, stakeholders and other Kickstart artists.
