Cathie and Sheet on the Rug by Keith Burt
Keith Burt's exhibition 'Repose' is a collection of studio paintings observed from life. Burt poses everything in the same place and arranges the lighting to suit. At length, he contemplates the folds and creases of a sheet laid across the floor. He finds the highlights and shadows in the breathing ribcage of his models, and mixes the perfect colours and tones that weave through a Persian rug or construct a bentwood chair. He then lays one brushstroke alongside another, piecing together a work of art. Crafting a painting.
Burt believes there may be disquiet in an empty chair and a deserted space, but there is comfort and harmony in the flowing undulations of a sheet… and a sense of calm to a model in repose.
