Crusade of the Nautilidae by Vivienne Kelly.

Vivienne Kelly

Recording and studying visual interpretations of deep sea-dwelling life, Vivienne Kelly constructs photographs that depict the organic and majestic appearance of microscopic life. These works become imagined and constructed habitats where life systems appear in abstract images of light. The hidden wealth of the ocean floor offers an abundance of form, structure and microscopic life to be revealed.

Using light to illuminate plant and algae-like forms in the landscape, traditional photographic methods such as multiple and long exposures are combined to create an imaginary and ephemeral world where terrestrial and oceanic landscapes merge into one. These images synthesise the phenomena of photosynthesis and bioluminescence as form and content with light becoming a tool that is constructive and symbolic. The relationship between light and plant life echoes the relationship between photography and light and Kelly explores this interconnection in the construction and documentation of her chosen subject.
